I have written a fiction novel and need a great cover for it before it can be published. My graphic design skill is not even remotely close to professional-level, I have no particular vision regarding the cover's design, and I have no idea how the lettering should look, so you are welcome to get as creative as you like as long as it meets the requirements for the Smashwords Style Guide (specifically step 23 regarding ebook covers). For convenience, the guide is provided below as one of the included files.

The story is the first chapter of an episodic series of books my best friend and I have been developing for about ten years. This book in particular is a dramedy about a young man in an insane asylum and his struggle to understand himself in a world that doesn't understand him. The monotony of his life is broken when a large, angry man claiming to be from the future is admitted to the facility. Through this man's rantings of honor and contractions our protagonist with find the courage he needs to take charge of his life find the pride in himself he never knew he had.

Files included with this contest:

+Some character sketches so that you know definitively what some of the main characters look like (see note at the end for details)
+The first three chapters of the story in .doc format, so that you can get a feel for the narrative style as well as the personalities of the characters
+The first three chapters in .rtf format, just in case you're using a computer from 1998 and have absolutely no access to a doc reader whatsoever (and yes, I have encountered this within the past five years)
+Smashwords Style Guide

I'm sorry that I don't have much money to offer for the prize. I'm a broke college student working two jobs to get by, so my budget truly is limited. However, not only will the winner received prize, I will also provide the entire rest of the story for you to read. Because I value consistency, I will also offer the winner first dibs on designing the cover for future Baron Syndicate books. Thank you for all of your time and good luck!

NOTE: I apologize for the inconvenience, but not all of the pictures are accurate regarding the mask's appearance. Use mask scribble color.jpg as a proper, 100% accurate reference for the physical appearance and colors of the mask. color reference.jpg is another color reference, higher quality. stupor c26 lanzendorf.png is a quick sketch and accurate to the physical appearance of all three characters depicted within.

Okay, I am loving this story! :D I think I'm gonna join just to see if I can get the rest of it for free XD However that section at the middle of the mask:

1. Are those dots or lines or... what, exactly?
2. Is that just a painted pattern on the nose?

It seems a couple of you are cutting it close to the deadline, and others have not replied to the PMs I have been sending, giving my opinions on their work. If freelancers need more time to work on their entries, I am willing to extend the time on the contest. In order for me to grant an extension, you must submit some work so that I may comment on it and give you a direction to go in over the last days of the contest.

Also, to extend the contest it will cost me more money. There needs to be a considerable amount of interest from everyone before I will grant the extension. Let me know here on the public clarification board what you think!

Does anyone here know of or play a game called Minecraft? I used it to build a replica of the asylum with Neil a long time ago. To help stimulate those creative juices, I have updated the brief with some images of that replica. I've provided the front of the asylum, a bird's eye view to show the circular structure of the facility, Lanzendorf and Dr. Goodrich's offices, the common room, and the courtyard where Stupor and C26 hold their Honorable Resolution. I hope it helps!

If anyone needs any other references, feel free to let me know and I'll do my best to get you whatever you need.

For those wondering about the mask, the texture is very woodlike and old. It's hand painted. The decorative red hair is very thick and coarse, like animal fur. The horns are actual horns (or tusks, if that is more consistent to their shape).

A note regarding the numbering of the book: Though the series is called "Baron Syndicate", the actual entity that is the Baron Syndicate does not exist in the timeline, therefore I am counting down to the "first" Baron Syndicate book via negative numbers. Ergo, this book is negative one (-1), the next book will be Baron Syndicate 0, and the following book will be titled Baron Syndicate, LLC.

Are there any specific items that you know you want on the cover itself? (Besides the Mask)

  If nothing else, I definitely want the title and subtitle of the book on there. Stupor himself would probably be more suitable than the mask itself because the story truly is about him. But to be completely honest, I do not fancy myself an artist so I am completely open to whatever creative vision the artist may have for the cover!

  The main character, Stupor, is 22 at the time this story takes place. C26 is a bit older, in his upper twenties. Lanzendorf is in his mid-thirties.
  
  As for the target audience, I plan to aim this story at young adults, but I feel it can be suitable for anyone 15+.
