using reference images to illustrate is not only perfectly legal, but also often suggested by designers to make figures you couldn't just imagine. every character I illustrate is made by me, point after point using illustrator's tools. and more, the art of making logo is far from tracing reference images, it has to do with communication, composition, cooor balance and beauty. you should know this.
