Hi Robin,
I know you said that you don't want a circular shape but I just had to suggest this because the circular shape is more dominant over the square shape.
If you have watched the movie Inception, all I have to show you is this scene and everything is going to become clear to you.

If you are looking for the "Out of the box" thinking this is way better than the square shape. Also circular shapes are much more interesting than square shapes, simple psihology. We are programmed to be more interested in circular shapes.
Anyway feel free to reject this if you really insist on square shapes, just giving you my thoughts from my professional view.
