Overview I'm developing a small consumer hardware product and need a talented, creative mechanical engineer to design the internal mechanism. The concept is a compact, hand-held device with an outer shell that the user twists. That twisting motion must drive an internal mechanism that raises a small output lever/arm approximately 90° and then returns it back to its original resting position — a single, smooth "raise-and-return" cycle per actuation. What you'll design A mechanism that converts rotary input (a twist about the central axis) into a controlled oscillating lift of a small output arm (up ~90°, then back to home). An outer shell / inner mechanism arrangement that self-locates and indexes repeatably onto a target surface each time it's placed. Sufficient mechanical advantage to deliver a moderate output force at the lever through the stroke (target on the order of ~30 N; final value to be confirmed against measured data I'll provide). Requirements Compact cylindrical envelope (roughly 70 mm diameter class), hand-operated, no motor or electronics — purely mechanical. Positive, driven return (not gravity-dependent). Open to your best mechanism choice — cam, scotch yoke, four-bar linkage, or something more creative. I'd like a short trade study and your recommendation. Designed for a resin (SLA) 3D-printed prototype first, then scalable toward production. Deliverables Concept sketch(es) + a brief mechanism trade study with your recommendation. Parametric 3D CAD with a native STEP export (plus STL for printing). A simple kinematic analysis showing the lever reaches ~90° and returns, with an estimate of the required input torque. A dimensioned drawing and print-ready files for the prototype. Skills Mechanism/kinematic design, parametric CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar with STEP output), design-for-3D-printing, and ideally hands-on prototyping experience. To apply Please share 2–3 examples of mechanism or small-mechanical-product work you've done (cams, linkages, compact assemblies). Tell me briefly which mechanism approach you'd lean toward and why. I'll provide exact target dimensions and a measurement dataset after we connect. An NDA will be required before I share the full application and specifications.

Hello, I have extensive experience designing compact mechanical mechanisms, including cams, linkages, pivots, rotary-to-linear motion systems, and small assemblies developed for functional prototyping. I’m experienced with parametric CAD in SolidWorks and Fusion 360, kinematic evaluation, mechanism packaging, and designing parts for resin 3D printing with a path toward production. For this application, I would evaluate a cam-driven or four-bar solution first because it can provide controlled 90° output motion, positive return, and useful mechanical advantage within a compact cylindrical envelope. I’ll compare the practical options, build the selected mechanism parametrically, verify the motion and approximate input torque, then deliver STEP, STL, drawings, and prototype-ready components. Is the 30 N target required throughout the stroke or primarily near the end of the 90° movement? Regards

I am interested in developing your compact twist-actuated lift-and-return mechanism from concept through functional prototype. With a strong understanding of mechanical design, kinematics, mechanisms, and CAD modeling, I can design a compact and reliable system that converts rotational/twist input into controlled lifting and return motion while maintaining smooth operation, appropriate clearances, and structural integrity. I can create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, technical drawings, and mechanism layouts, with careful consideration of materials, tolerances, spring or return-force requirements, manufacturability, and component interaction. I will evaluate the mechanism for potential interference, wear points, excessive loads, and ease of assembly, then refine the design as needed. I can also support prototype fabrication and testing to validate the motion and make practical improvements based on test results. My goal is to deliver a robust, compact, and manufacturable mechanism that meets your functional requirements rather than simply producing a CAD model. I will maintain clear communication throughout the project, provide regular design updates, and incorporate feedback efficiently. I am ready to review your initial concept, dimensions, operating requirements, and prototype constraints and turn them into a practical working solution.

Hello, I’m excited to submit my proposal for your compact twist-actuated lift-and-return mechanism project. I recently completed a similar mechanism design for a medical device that required precise, repeatable actuation within a handheld form factor. Your project’s focus on a purely mechanical, compact, and robust solution is exactly where my expertise shines. I understand you need a mechanism that transforms a user’s twist into a smooth, controlled 90° lift and return of an output arm, all within a 70mm cylindrical envelope. Repeatable self-location and moderate force output are key, and your openness to creative mechanism choices is appreciated—I thrive on finding elegant, manufacturable solutions for unique motion challenges. I have over 15 years of experience in mechanical engineering, CAD/3D modeling, and hands-on prototyping, with a strong track record in developing compact assemblies, cam-driven linkages, and consumer product mechanisms. My work includes cam and four-bar linkage actuation for compact tools and a twist-driven, 3D-printed assembly for a consumer gadget, both requiring kinematic analysis and design-for-3D-printing. For your mechanism, I would initially explore cam-based and four-bar linkage solutions, providing a short trade study comparing precision, smoothness, and ease of prototyping, before recommending the optimal approach. My design process ensures seamless translation from concept to prototype, with attention to manufacturability and tactile feel. * Detailed concept sketches and a concise trade study with my recommended mechanism approach * Parametric 3D CAD models in your preferred format (SolidWorks, STEP, STL) tailored for resin 3D printing * Kinematic analysis demonstrating the required lift/return motion and torque estimation * Fully-dimensioned drawings and print-ready files for your prototype build Please contact me—I’d be delighted to discuss your requirements in detail and share relevant examples under NDA. Thanks, Robert

Hi, Thank you for sharing such a well-defined and intriguing project. I’m excited by your concept and am confident I can deliver a robust, compact twist-actuated lift-and-return mechanism tailored to your needs. As a seasoned mechanical engineer with extensive experience in mechanism and consumer device design, I understand the importance of achieving smooth, reliable motion in a constrained envelope—especially for user-facing hardware. Recently, I developed a cam-driven dosing mechanism for a handheld medical device, where space, repeatability, and positive return were critical. I’ve also designed a compact four-bar linkage for a folding tool and created several scotch yoke and cam-based actuators for 3D-printed prototypes. These experiences taught me how to optimize for mechanical advantage, manufacturability, and user interaction in tight spaces. For your project, I would start with a brief trade study comparing cam, scotch yoke, and four-bar linkage options, prioritizing smooth motion, durability, and printability. My initial inclination is toward a cam-based or modified four-bar mechanism, as these can deliver controlled, repeatable motion in a small footprint and are well-suited for resin 3D printing. - Concept sketches and a concise trade study outlining mechanism options with my top recommendation - Parametric 3D CAD files (STEP and STL) designed for 3D printing and future scalability - A simple kinematic analysis demonstrating the output arm’s range and input torque estimation - Fully-dimensioned drawings and print-ready files for rapid prototyping I am eager to apply my skills to your product and ensure a smooth, collaborative process from concept through prototype. I look forward to working with you. Best Regards, David

The bottleneck is the need for a compact, purely mechanical rotary-to-lift mechanism with consistent indexing. The challenge lies in converting a 70mm cylindrical twist input into a reliable 90° oscillating lever with positive, driven return without electronics or motors. I will conduct a trade study to choose between a cam, Scotch yoke, or four-bar linkage, then parametrize and optimize the CAD model for SLA 3D printing, ensuring mechanical advantage targets and repeatable self-locating shell alignment. I'll verify lever motion and torque through kinematic analysis and prototype prints. Which mechanical linkage approach—cam, Scotch yoke, or four-bar linkage—do you prefer exploring first for optimized performance and compactness?
