Hi, For a simple sensor node, a 2-layer board is absolutely fine and will keep your fabrication costs at rock bottom. However, doing Wi-Fi on 2 layers in a tight 50x50mm space introduces a specific layout trap that I will solve for you. The 2-Layer RF Ground Trap: When routing I2C and GPIOs to your sensor headers, it is very easy to accidentally slice up the bottom ground plane with signal traces. If the ground plane directly beneath the ESP32 is fragmented, you destroy the RF return path. This causes the Wi-Fi signal to drop out randomly and introduces noise into your ADC readings. I will design this 2-layer board using strict component grouping. I will route your sensor headers and USB-to-UART lines almost entirely on the top layer, guaranteeing the bottom layer remains a solid, unbroken ground plane for maximum Wi-Fi range and stable power delivery.
