The hardest part of this job is keeping the character's appearance and proportions perfectly consistent while it moves. I would build the animation starting with the core body movement, getting the friendly wave just right, then I would add the facial expressions, making sure the eyes track and the mouth smiles naturally within the character's established design. Subtle secondary animation on clothing or hair would come last, so the main action is solid first. I use Blender for 3D Modelling and animation, also Marmoset Toolbag for rendering.
