Design Traditional Himalayan Hill Cottage

I’m getting ready to build a two-storey, 2 000–2 200 sq ft cottage on a mountainside plot in Uttarakhand, and I need an architect who already knows what works—and survives—up here. The brief is to keep the look unmistakably Traditional Himalayan, marry it to all-wood construction, and finish it with a practical tin roof that shrugs off snow and rain. Inside, the plan must revolve around a welcoming fireplace, flow out to covered balconies on both levels, and open further onto a front deck that frames the valley view. Large windows, timber beams, and detailing that respects local craft are essential. Because we’re building in seismic zone IV with high-wind exposure, every decision—foundation anchoring, wall section, insulation, passive-solar orientation—has to respect the climate and terrain. Familiarity with regional bylaws, slope-stability methods, rain-water harvesting provisions, and fire safety in timber structures will be crucial.
