Note: I already did the main part of finding the principles and apps and I will provide them for the conforming/deficient examples.
The E3 goal for design is to create products that are effective, efficient, and exciting. The products are effective because they get the job done. They are efficient because they do not encumber the user with distractions or unnecessary effort. They are exciting because they create a satisfying user experience. That's easy to say, but how does one go about meeting this goal? One approach is follow, or attend to, a set of design principles while designing. An example is the set of Design Principles provided on the Android Developer web site. There are 17 principles organized in three categories: Enhance Me (4), Simplify My Life (8), and Make Me Amazing (5).
For this assignment, you are to prepare and submit a report on design. Select and analyze two of the Android Developer Design Principles. Summarize each principle. Re-state the Android description and give your own interpretation as well.
For each of the two selected principles, find and analyze two examples from real applications for mobile devices. One example should demonstrate a successful realization of the principle, and the other example should demonstrate a poor or deficient realization of the principle. Discuss. Elaborate, in your own words, why each example does or does not achieve the design principle. For the example that is poor or deficient, suggest an improvement. Use screen snaps, photos, diagrams, or other visual aides to support your analysis.
Your report should begin with an introductory section on design. What is design? What are design goals and design principles? Find at least three publications on design using Google Scholar or the ACM Digital Library. Review and discuss the central ideas in the publications. You may cite and reference more than three sources; but, ensure at least three are scholarly publications (i.e., not web pages, blog postings, etc.). A scholarly publication is typically either a conference paper, a journal paper, a book, or a chapter in a book. Cite and reference the sources as per the instructions in the template file (see below).
Prepare your report by first downloading the template. Read the template and follow the instructions, re formatting, citing, referencing, writing style, etc. Edit directly in the renamed template using a word processor such as Microsoft Word or The Document Foundation's LibreOffice.
The headings in the template file are typical for reports that describe a user study, which you will do for the final project. For this assignment, a different organization is needed. The first three headings should be ABSTRACT, Keywords, and INTRODUCTION, as in the template. The last two headings should be CONCLUSIONS and REFERENCES, as in the template. (You may omit the ACKNOWLEDGMENT section.) Between the INTRODUCTION and CONCLUSIONS sections, include additional sections with headings and sub-headings to appropriately organize your four design examples. Below is an example:
DESIGN PRINCIPLE: PICTURES ARE FASTER THAN WORDS
DESIGN PRINCIPLE: ONLY INTERRUPT ME IF IT'S IMPORTANT
The above is just an example. Feel free to pick your own design principles (from Design Principles) and use headings and sub-headings as you see fit.
Use the styles in the template file. Do not pad with white space.
Report length: 4-5 pages (formatted as per the template).
