3 pages critical book review from the book Hammer head by Nina Naclaughlin,
you’ll want a number of quotations from the text itself. You can use secondary sources (Hammer Head is your primary source) as well, but you’ll have to cite them appropriately.
I. Bibliographic Information (separate from the body of the text): Author’s name, book’s full title, place of publication, publisher, edition, date, page count, and price.
II. Introduction: An introduction to the text that ends with your thesis statement. Before getting to your thesis you can speak to the biography of the author, the type of book, similar books, connections to the world outside of the book, and what thesis, if any, the book itself seems to have.
III. Summary: This should be a shorter paragraph in that we have all read the same book. Still, no spoilers!
IV. Analysis and Evaluation: This should be the bulk of your essay. It is also the section in which you might consider a healthy dose of quote integration. What arguments do you want to make about the book that may contribute to your main argument of whether it was a good book or not? You’ll find a number of questions to consider below.
V. Conclusion: Based on what you have come up with in the “Analysis and Evaluation” section, remind us of whether or not this book bears recommending to other people? If so, to whom? And even if you don’t like the book, who might be the intended audience for it?
Some Questions to Get You Thinking
Who is the author? Nationality, political persuasion, training, intellectual interests, personal history, and historical context may provide crucial details about how a work takes shape. Does it matter, for example, that the biographer was the subject’s best friend? What difference would it make if the author participated in the events she writes about?
When was the work written? How relevant is it today?
What is the book’s genre? Out of what field does it emerge? Does it conform to or depart from the conventions of its genre?
What exactly is the subject or topic of the book? Does the author cover the subject adequately? Does the author cover all aspects of the subject in a balanced fashion? What is the approach to the subject (topical, analytical, chronological, descriptive)?
How has this book helped you understand the subject? Would you recommend the book to your reader?
What is the thesis—or main argument—of the book?
What does the author choose to emphasize?
Does the author’s presentation contradict or refute alternative interpretations?
What is the author’s principal argument, if any?
What sorts of evidence does the author employ?
Is the book convincing in style and substance? Why or why not?
How does the author structure the text? What are the parts that make up the whole?
Does the author accomplish their purpose?
Is the author fair to their subjects, or is the author overly biased?
Is the book well written, or is it in some way repetitive, obscure, or confusing?
To whom would the book appeal? What audience did the author intend?
