Even if there isn't a wall directly above, the wall you want to remove is almost certainly supporting the floor span. In multi-story homes, joists rarely span the entire width of the house; they usually meet and overlap on an internal load-bearing wall. When you remove this wall, those joists lose their "middle" support, which can lead to floor sag or structural failure. You will need to install a structural beam (usually a Universal Beam or "RSJ") to pick up those loads and transfer them to the side walls or new pillars.
