Connect Gmail to Outlook

I need my Gmail account properly added to the Microsoft Outlook desktop client. Right now I can’t even finish the initial setup—Outlook never accepts the account and no mail comes in or goes out. There are no useful error codes; it simply refuses to complete the connection.
