Richard Sumner in The Desk Set wants to use computer technology to make work both more efficient but also more humane for those doing the work--freeing workers from repetitive tasks so that they can concentrate on higher-level intellectual tasks such as analysis and interpretation. These men represent America's optimistic belief in the values of new technologies in the post-WW II era, a time when America's technological achievements in that war seemed to presage similar achievements in peace. It was also a time of unprecedented economic growth.
