OpenCV Identify "pockets" in image/depth files

Project in C++ to identify pockets shown in attached image and dataset. A colour image with depth data in PLY format is supplied for each image.
Algorithm used must be generic and work on all images using change in gradient or similar filter.
1) All pockets must be circled about their center.
2) If there is an edge to the top of the image this must be identified using a line
Windows form must be used to display results and have an open file dialog to load new sample data for testing.
