Our current Salesforce functionality:
Our company has several websites to manage different organizations within the company. Each of those websites (using Drupal) interfaces with our single Salesforce instance. When a customer fills out a webform on one of the websites, a contact is created in Salesforce. To know which organization the customer is registering for, we define a custom Salesforce field on the contact record called org_code. The webform passes this value over as a hidden field. If a customer fills out a webform on more than one website, there will be multiple contact records created - each contact will share similar details (name, address, email address, etc) but the org_code will be different. This allows us to report on each organization separately.
FUTURE SALESFORCE FUNCTIONALITY:
We would like to eliminate the creation of multiple contact records when the same person fills out forms on multiple websites (as explained above). Instead we would like to keep a single contact record for these people and have a multi-select picklist with the organization codes that can be selected.
Since the website's code doesn't have any way to detect duplicates in Salesforce (it always creates another contact), we need a Salesforce trigger written On Insert to detect if there is a duplicate contact record (based on decided duplication rules) and instead of inserting a new contact, update the existing contact record and add that org_code to the picklist for the matching contact record.
