there is 3 questions:
1)Figure 1 below shows a tension member that is constructed using A572 Grade 60 steel. The member is constructed of a single angle L 8 x 6 x 1/2 with the long legs bolted to a 1” thick gusset plate using 3/4” diameter bolts.
1. Calculate the goverining design strength of the tension member.
2. Do you recommend using this tension member to support a tension load (Pu) = 250 kips? Why?
2)Figure 2 shows a lap connection between two 12x1/2 plates. Both plates are made of A36 steel and are connected using 7/8” diameter bolts. Calculate the goverining design strength of the tension member.
3)In Figure 3 below, a 2C 12 x 25 tension member is bolted to a 17”x3/4” gusset plate. The maximum
factored tensile load used in the design of the tension member (Pu) is equal to 400 kips.
Both of the tension member and the gusset plate are made of A572 Grade 50 Steel. The connection
between the member and the gusset plate is made using 3/4”-diameter bolts.
The owner has decided to change the usage of the building which will result in an inctrease of the loads by about (20%) of the ultimate load value used in the original design of the building. Do you recommend the use of this tension member to carry the expected new loads? Why?
