Structural Engineer Needed for Steel Canopy Design (36m × 36m × 8m) Title: Structural Engineer Required to Redesign Steel Canopy Foundation & Reduce Steel/Concrete Quantities (Saudi Code) --- Project Description: I am looking for a professional structural engineer experienced in steel structures and industrial sheds (preferably with experience in Saudi Arabia) to redesign a steel canopy with the following dimensions: 36 meters × 36 meters Height: 8 meters Number of columns must remain as per the original drawing The goal is to optimize the foundation and steel structure to significantly reduce the quantity of concrete and steel, while fully complying with SBC + AISC codes. --- Scope of Work 1. Structural Design of the Steel Canopy Complete redesign of the steel frame (columns, rafters, bracing, purlins) Reduce total steel weight to approximately 38–40 tons Select economic yet safe steel sections Full load calculations (Dead, Live, Wind) according to SBC 301 --- 2. Foundation Redesign Reduce concrete quantity from ~130 m³ to ~70–75 m³ Design isolated footings with pedestals Base plate redesign (size, thickness, anchor bolts) Bearing capacity check and soil pressure verification according to SBC 304 --- 3. Required Engineering Drawings (DWG + PDF) Foundation plan + footing details Steel structure plans and elevations Reinforcement drawings (rebar plan for footings & pedestals) Steel connection details Sections and construction details --- 4. Structural Calculations Complete calculation report (PDF) Reactions for each column Steel section design according to AISC Footing design according to SBC --- 5. Hi hamzakhiri91281, Just last week I completed a similar task successfully, so I can get started on this without any ramp-up time. Two questions: 1) Please confirm wind parameters per SBC 301/ASCE 7: Vult, exposure category, topography (Kzt), importance level, and whether the canopy is fully open or partially enclosed. 2) Provide geotechnical data for SBC 304/ACI 318 checks: allowable bearing pressure, soil type/site class, groundwater level, and allowable settlement; if not available, may we proceed with SBC presumptive values until the report is issued? Two suggestions: 1) Use tapered built-up rafters/columns with moment frames in one direction and cross-bracing in the other, plus optimized Z-purlin spacing; this reduces steel while controlling drift/deflection. 2) Rework bases as compact plates with four anchors and a shear key; size isolated footings by pressure matching (incl. uplift/overturning). Use strap/combined footings only where edge eccentricity requires. Action Plan: Phase 1 (Day 0–1) Review current drawings, confirm loads/grids, collect wind/geotech. Phase 2 (Day 1–2) Develop two framing options; quick analysis and weight takeoff; select to meet 38–40 t target. Phase 3 (Day 2–4) Detailed analysis and member/connection design (AISC 360, serviceability), base plates/anchors (ACI 318 Ch.17).
