Hi. Interesting project. I congratulate you on your initiative. This design can be carried out using a small microprocessor such as ARDUINO NANO and a 4 x 4 matrix panel Matrix Array 16 Key Membrane Switch Keypad (or similar devices). Both devices are of limited space to be easily embedded in small places in case you require it. Also these can work with batteries. Something very important, that you do not mention in your proposal, is how to change the password. It could be changed using an extra button to access this option. The key could be recorded in the EEPROM memory of the microprocessor to be able to change it as many times as you want.
