I have a CAN-based hardware concept for trucks and excavators that still needs an expert eye and solid firmware. The board carries a CAN transceiver plus an as-yet-undecided microcontroller; your first job will be to review the schematic and component choices, making sure the design can reliably tap into a heavy-vehicle J1939 network. Once the electronics check out, I need production-ready code that listens for multiple PGNs, performs light, on-board processing, and then forwards all remaining data to my back-end through a Bluetooth link. On the edge we have to handle three record types: sensor readings, diagnostic trouble codes, and operational parameters. Any PGN we do not actively process must be packed efficiently and shipped over Bluetooth for cloud processing, so memory management and timing will matter. If you are comfortable selecting and configuring the right microcontroller tool-chain—Arduino, ESP32, STM32 or another that suits the job—while writing robust, well-documented C/C++ code with crystal-clear CAN filters and Bluetooth LE routines, I would like to work together. I will share the current schematic, parts list and J1939 message matrix once we start; I expect back a reviewed schematic with change notes, fully commented source, and a concise integration guide so my team can move straight to field testing.

Your project for J1939 CAN edge hardware and firmware development immediately brought to mind a recent engagement where I architected a similar embedded system for heavy machinery. We successfully integrated a CAN interface with an ESP32 microcontroller to handle real-time data acquisition and transmission, achieving robust communication within a noisy industrial environment. I'm confident my experience directly addresses your need for a reliable J1939 tap and robust edge processing. My approach would involve a thorough schematic and component review for the CAN interface, ensuring impedance matching and signal integrity for reliable J1939 communication. I'll then select a suitable microcontroller, likely an STM32 or similar, based on power, performance, and peripheral requirements for your processing and Bluetooth needs. Firmware development will focus on efficient PGN parsing, implementing the specified on-board processing logic, and establishing a stable Bluetooth serial profile for data offload. Given the critical nature of J1939 data integrity, have you considered specific error handling mechanisms beyond standard CAN acknowledgments? Also, regarding the Bluetooth link, what are your primary concerns for data throughput and security? I'm eager to discuss your project in more detail and explore how my expertise can bring your concept to life.

Hello, I'm Iosif, an embedded systems and firmware engineer with experience in CAN bus systems, J1939 protocol development, BLE connectivity, vehicle telematics, and production-grade embedded firmware. Your project is particularly interesting because it combines three critical areas: reliable heavy-vehicle CAN integration, efficient edge processing, and low-latency wireless data forwarding. My approach would begin with a complete hardware review: • Schematic and component validation • CAN transceiver selection review • MCU evaluation (ESP32, STM32, nRF52, or other suitable platform) • Power integrity and automotive robustness checks • J1939 network compatibility assessment Firmware development would include: • J1939 stack implementation and PGN filtering • Processing of sensor data, DTCs, and operational parameters • Efficient CAN message buffering and memory management • BLE communication layer for backend transmission • Configurable filtering and forwarding rules • Error handling, diagnostics, and watchdog recovery mechanisms For unknown or unprocessed PGNs preserving full data fidelity for cloud-side analysis. Deliverables: • Reviewed schematic with recommendations and change notes • Production-ready embedded C/C++ firmware • Fully documented source code • CAN filter configuration documentation • BLE integration guide • Build and deployment instructions for field testing Best regards, Iosif Peterfi

Hi. I'm an electronics and embedded engineer by training (electronic and communications engineering), and this kind of CAN-bus work on heavy vehicles, from schematic review through to production firmware, is something I've done hands-on rather than just read about. From the brief, the first pass is the hardware: reviewing your schematic and the CAN transceiver plus microcontroller choice so the board sits reliably on a J1939 heavy-vehicle network, with proper termination, protection and an MCU that has the right CAN peripheral. Then the firmware: listen for the PGNs you care about, separate the three record types (sensor readings, diagnostic trouble codes, operational parameters), do the light on-board processing, and pack everything else efficiently to ship over Bluetooth to your back end. On a busy 250 kbit/s bus, timing and buffering matter, so I'd use the MCU's hardware CAN filters and a tight ring buffer so nothing drops on traffic spikes, without the Bluetooth side stalling the CAN side. I've worked with STM32, CAN and this edge capture-and-uplink firmware, and I'm comfortable selecting the microcontroller if that's still open. What you get is one person who can both sign off the electronics and write the firmware, so the review and the production code come from someone who actually understands the J1939 side, not two half-fits. I'd start by checking the schematic and locking the MCU choice, then build the PGN listener and the Bluetooth uplink to production quality.
