# Hydroelectric power computational project

I'm currently doing some study on hydroelectric power, and to further my knowledge, I am looking for computations on a simple design with a number of unknowns. The design goes as follows: Design a water circulation system that can be used as a renewable resource to generate mechanical energy, which can supply 5kW of power to a home. For example, a water tower (or any other elevated water source) at a desired height will drop water to a turbine which will generate 5 kW of power to the house. The return side will have a pump that will recirculate the water back to the tower.

Unknowns in this case, which will require both a little online research and calculations:

1. The height of the tower (ft.)

2. The mass flow rate

3. Outlet Velocity (V2), assuming Inlet Velocity (V1) is 0.

- Not sure, but I believe these will be functions of temperature, so consider those as well.

4. The work the pump will produce to send the water back up to the water source (tower).

This is an open ended project, so as engineers you can choose some values, as long as they meet the criteria, which is supplying 5kW power to a home.

You may search online and find appropriate efficiency ratings for the pump, or just assume one. Once this problem is solved, conduct the the calculations again to solve for 7.5 kW for the home. This second part will supply power to the grid which can generate money.

This project should not be too difficult for anyone with decent knowledge in thermo and fluid dynamics. If needed, you may use excel, but I will need the spreadsheets and some handwritten sample calculations for me to study your process.

I have attached a rough sketch to illustrate my idea, along with some sample calculations on how I would approach this problem.

So to clarify I will want:

Sample calculations so I can see approach

chosen and calculated values

all free body diagrams

Time is not a great issue, but budget is, so keep it reasonable. I will be available at any time to answer questions through the whole process and remember some values may be chosen (ie size of head (drop), efficiency ratings, etc) so long as the final criteria is met, which is 5kW as well as 7.5 kW power supply to the home.
