To earn an A in this class you must:
1) Complete all the requirements for a B listed above, fully and on-time.
2) Write a 6-8 page individually researched essay on an example of science
accommodation of your choice. This essay will have a formal writing prompt and
must be turned in on-time (last day of class).
This essay is the culmination of what we have been focusing on all semester: how science
writing gets its “job” done. Remember, It is not enough to make groundbreaking discoveries in
science and technology. Those discoveries must be communicated to the people that care,
whether they are scientific peers, the world of public policy, or the general public.
For this assignment, write an essay to incoming college students in the sciences. It should be 6-8
pages in length and use at least 4 of the sources we have read this semester as examples that
support your claims. Use direct quotes and include a works cited page (choose the citation style
you are most familiar with).
Your major question: What do new science college students need to know about the differences
between academic science writing and more popular discourse?
Use your essays 1 and 2 as brainstorming essays. What did you include in them that first year
science students need to know? In this essay you should note that varying levels of difference,
from values to length to tone to sources used. What are the conventions, purposes, and
structure of different types of science writing?
