You have offered three doors — script, shoot, edit. Both bids ahead of me chose the edit. I would take the first one, and not because it pays better. You cannot fix in the edit what was never shot, and you cannot shoot what was never written. A good editor makes a finished film ten percent better. The script decides whether there is a film at all. You say the scope is still flexible, which means nothing is fixed yet — and that is the cheapest hour you will ever spend on this, the one before anybody rolls. Experience: I wrote and directed Children of War, a feature about the 1971 war in Bangladesh. Best Director at the Dada Saheb Phalke Film Festival, a Remi at WorldFest Houston, Best Debut Director in Jakarta and Patna. It released in India and Bangladesh, screened on Bangladeshi national television, and it moved their Parliament to recognise the war's rape survivors as Freedom Fighters. Thirteen documentaries besides. Listed on IMDb under my name. Approach: before I write a line I woud to hear the film out loud from you. The thing you cannot stop talking about is usually the actual film, and it is rarely what is in the written pitch. Then a treatment, then the first act, then we stop and check it is still your film before I write the rest. Timeline: treatment day 5, first act day 12, full draft day 21. You can walk at any of those three gates and keep what exists. What is it about? And is anything written already?
