I'm about to start work on a chat application in flash builder and would like to know how to add moderator tags and smileys to a text area properly.
I'm trying to replicate justin tv's moderator/admin/staff tags in flash. The tags are created in CSS on justin tv's chat, I'm not sure if the tags could be created using CSS in a text area, or whether they'd have to be images. They'd have to be in line with the text after the tag.
As for the smileys I'd like to have smileys that vary in size. When someone types a keyword “(troll)” for example it'll be replaced by a specific smiley. Here's an example of what I'm after [url removed, login to view] although the mod badges don't line up with the text properly in the example you can get the general idea of what I'm looking for.
I need a working example (basically a mock up of a chat that only updates the text area) that I can incorporate into my own chat application. A simple text area (I'll need the scroll bar to be in maximum position when the text area is full each time a new line is added), input box and button will be adequate. Obviously you don't have to map all the smileys that I've included, just a few of varying size to demonstrate. I'll map them all myself in the main chat application.
One other thing I'd like is an example of how to change the colour of the persons name in the chat.
This is what I used in the screen shot:
