Project Description:
I would like to choose the third subject: “Waiting times in Hospital Emergency Room.”
“In an imaginary (or a real) hospital’s emergency room, patients suffer not only with their injuries but also with long waiting times. The management would like to have a solution suggestion from you. “
I consider an emergency room of a hospital, which consists of the initial screening room, the medical exam room and the surgery room. There are two types of patients (Regular, Critical) arrive to the emergency room. Regular patients arrive for medical examination and critical patients arrive for surgery. A regular patient first enters to the initial screening room, where the nurse assesses the condition of the patient. The patients are served by the nurse according to their arrival times (FIFO). After this initial screening is completed, the patient goes to the waitingroom and waits there until the doctor becomes available for his/her medical examination. On the other hand, a critical patient goes directly to the waiting room (bypassing the initial screening) and waits until the doctor is allocated to perform his/her surgery. For simplicity, assume that there are only one nurse and one doctor in this emergency room. To select the next patient to be served, the FIFO discipline is used among regular patients and the FIFO discipline is used among the critical patients. However, the critical patients have a higher priority than the regular patients. Therefore, if the doctor is busy with a regular patient at the time when a critical patient arrives, the doctor immediately starts the surgery of the critical patient. In other words, the examination of that particular regular patient is interrupted and that patient starts waiting again (put back into the queue). Once the surgery is completed, the doctor comes back to complete the interrupted exam of the regular patient if there is no other critical patient waiting. In this case, we assume that the doctor starts the whole process of examining the interrupted regular patient from scratch and the service time is equal to the original service time value. Basically, we assign a service time to a regular patient and keep using the same value when his/her examination is resumed. The system is empty and the resources are idle at time 0.
