We have a basic scheduling product and we wish to send out notifications of work queues to our mobile staff on their mobile phone handsets.
We also want our staff to send us back notification of when they arrive at an assigned job.
Originally, we considered getting a JAVA app designed to sit on the phone but it seems the standards between the OS on the mobile phones differs which makes this route unattractive due to the increased support overhead and a hazardous upgrade path.
More than 90% of our staff do not use any form of GPRS and a prime requirement of this solution is that the end user does not required any configuration.
Our ideas to resolve this include sending out an MMS or a business card with some app buried in it, so that the field staff can self install an application with ease or that we just investgiate basic SMS messaging to and from the phone.
