Hi, I'm writing this from Archlinux on my ThinkPad T490 so I would say you made a good choice. Arch is minimal as it can get by default, specific software I would recommend is ucode/microcode, which is basically a blob providing fixes for the processor, and video driver as these are not preinstalled on the system. Personally I use Hyperland VM for desktop, but I prefer tiling windows so it may not work for everyone.
