I have been using Linux as my primary operating system for over 10 years. I attended and graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), often considered one of the best tech universities in the world. For a while, when I was a student, I worked in NeCSys, the IT department of the MIT Media Lab where I was paid to use the linux skills that I had acquired over the years of my own personal use.
Many script coders think that they should write scripts that do the required job with the least number of code lines. However, this often leads to cryptic scripts that are hard to decipher, debug, and modify if requirements change.
My approach is to not try to make the script as short as possible, but rather to make the script as readable and easy to understand as possible. Thus, most of my scripts are easy to follow even for a beginner. They have comments where necessary so that if I have to modify the script after say a year, I still know what each part does and why I wrote it the way I did.
I will write a script, script_1 such that when script_1 is run, it will check if a certain script supplied by you, say script_2 is in a specified directory. If it is, it will move script_2 to a directory named executed, and then run script_2 as root. Further, I'll arrange for script_1 to run at boot time and also periodically in a configurable manner.
