My small rural dance company NOCTURN has been in existence for 10 years. The current logo has worked well for us but the aims of the company have developed and I know feel we need something that can express our changed ambitions.
BACKGROUND ON NOCTURN
We create DIGITAL ART through PARTICIPATION.
At NOCTURN we invent relevant online and digital installations that comes from and leads to people making connections about:
It’s impact on us, and
Tought provoking contemporary dance stories.
We place community participation and inclusion at the heart of our creative processes, specifically creating unconventional opportunities for everyone. We see our community as co-authors of our work.
Established in 2010 we provide a fresh perspective for our rural and online communities to engage in dance.
We do things differently, in our own way and we do them very well.
WHAT EFFECTS US ALL, WE TALK ABOUT
Social commentary is our thing.
We explore themes around our consumption of technology and the effect it has on us, the importance of positive mental health, LGBT+ issues, and one which is very close to my own experiences, our advocacy for adult dance.
TECHNOLOGY EVERYONE HAS ACCESS TOO IS KEY
From mobile phones to live physical environments; from iBeacons to projection mapping; from using social media as a story telling platform to pushing apps to their limits, are just some of the tools we use to get you interacting with our stories.
We take technology that we all can all access on the devices we have already and reshape their purpose for our own storytelling.
Our aspiration is simple:
Enjoy and be involved in our exceptional stories.
Then take a look under the hood and see how it’s done. Let us share our knowledge so others can do this too.
DANCE IS FOR EVERYONE
NOCTURN offers a balanced approach to participatory dance:
A very important word for us, and something you will observe in all our workshops, is humour. What we see as a key ingredient for unlocking everyone’s creativity and a way for us to bond together on our learning journey.
We have a passion for teaching in education, our community and to professionals. All delivered through our own initiatives and our creative engagement partnerships with organisations and venues.
You will see us working in all educational settings. From creating magical experiences about dragons with Early Years right though to complex gritty narratives about what affects us with Post Graduate dancers. Our work is universal and adaptable. We are well known for delivering high-quality engagement activities to our community participants (young people, older adults, LGBT+ etc) ensuring no one is excluded. Inclusivity is very important to us as well as anti-racism. When we work with professionals it’s about offering an open dialogue and supportive space to take creative risks.
Our specialist work in SEN schools allows children to feel safe using playfulness, acceptance, curiosity & empathy.
To produce a redesign of our logo. It should feel like a development of, not a total restart.
To make it feel appropiate to our key themes - digital art, social commentary and participation.
A simple way to visualise us would be that we want to be the 'BLACK MIRROR' (Charlie Brooker) of dance.
Aim to express that we are:
• Natural listeners
• Used to noticing
• Able to challenge in a kind and fun way
Create a combination mark logo.
One design, two formats, for use on a black or white background.
The symbol and/or lettering of the logo works easily with merchandise i.e. tshirts, hoddies, waterbottles etc.
NOCTURN should only ever be shown in uppercase. Never with Dance or Dance Company after it.
We are in the process of updating our website and a copy of our new colour palette is attached for reference.
Provide an vector file for use on large formats as well as web.
