I’m building a low-voltage hardscape “ledge” light that a homeowner or contractor can service in the field without disturbing the stone cap. The under-cap fixture must stay fixed in place while the light engine is removed and swapped from the front face. To make that possible I want a metal housing that seals out moisture yet allows the light module to mate through touch/contact-based electrical pads rather than hard-wired leads. A small screwdriver, hex key, or similar tool can be part of the process; tool-free isn’t required, but the operation has to be repeatable, reliable, and weather-resistant. I’m open to alternative retention ideas—magnetic keepers or slide-in cartridges, for example—provided the electrical interface still uses conductive contact pads or a comparably simple system. The goal is a clean, professional appearance once installed, fast serviceability when an LED board eventually fails, and no compromising the integrity of the stonework each time it’s opened. What I need from you: • Concept and mechanical design of the metal housing, internal light module, and mating contacts • Clear assembly and replacement procedure shown in exploded views or step-by-step illustrations • Material and finish recommendations that stand up to outdoor conditions (rain, freeze/thaw, salt) • Basic electrical layout showing how the contact pads tie into a standard 12 V AC/DC low-voltage run If you can supply photoreal renders or a quick prototype model to prove the replacement action, that would be a plus. Once the design shows a reliable, weather-sealed swap mechanism from the front face, we’ll move on to detailing for manufacturing.

Hi, this looks like an interesting concept, do you have any other references with similar designs with you? I am assuming the electronic part is covered and only the mechanical housing and mechanism need to be thought of. Do you have any preferences on the material also, I'm thinking aluminium cast will be a preferred choice? I can show the preliminary layout free of charge, to ensure we are on the same page. Some of my work cannbe seen at my portfolio site designcenter3d.in. Here is more about me: A mechanical/Industrial designer with the strong sense of professional ethic. I possess skills to convert an idea into a functional design. I am strong at technical concept design, feasibility study, product research, engineering design, CAD, aesthetics, ergonomics, DFMA, Rendering, Animations etc. My brand name is FairCAD and my website highlights some of my work.

Hello, I can design a serviceable, weather-sealed ledge light system with a front-access replaceable light module using contact-based electrical pads—no hard wiring during maintenance. I’m a Mechanical Engineer with over 2 years of experience in mechanical design, sheet metal, and product development, including housings and assemblies for outdoor applications. I can also share samples of similar design work. Design approach: 1. Housing concept (fixed under stone cap) • Fabricated powder-coated aluminum or stainless steel (SS304/316) housing • Fully sealed rear and sides (IP65–IP67 target) • Integrated mounting flanges to fix permanently under the stone cap • Front service opening with gasketed interface 2. Replaceable light module (front access) • Slide-in or cartridge-style LED module • Retained using set screws / hex fasteners or guided rail system • Option for magnetic alignment + mechanical locking for repeatable positioning 3. Electrical interface (key feature) • Spring-loaded pogo pins or flat conductive pads inside housing • Matching contact pads on the light module • Self-aligning interface to ensure reliable connection at 12V AC/DC • No loose wires during replacement 4. Sealing & durability • Silicone or EPDM gasket at front interface • Corrosion-resistant finishes (anodizing / powder coating) • Designed for rain, freeze-thaw cycles, and outdoor exposure Thanks

Hi, I reviewed your concept, and this isn’t just a housing design, it’s a serviceability and sealing problem that needs to be solved together, not separately. I’ll design a front-access, weather-sealed system with a reliable retention mechanism (magnetic or mechanical) and contact-based power interface that ensures consistent connectivity without exposed wiring. The focus will be on repeatable module swaps, tight sealing against moisture, and a clean installed appearance without compromising the stonework. You’ll get a complete mechanical concept, exploded assembly flow, material/finish specs for outdoor durability, and a clear electrical layout for 12V systems. Once we connect, I can walk you through similar product design work and how I’d approach prototyping this mechanism. Quick question, do you have size constraints or stone cap thickness defined, or should I account for flexible tolerances? Best regards, Muskan

Your focus on a user-serviceable low-voltage ledge light addresses a major gap in the landscape lighting industry, where most fixtures are treated as disposable once a single component fails. I recently engineered a modular outdoor architectural luminaire that utilized a tool-less replaceable LED engine, successfully balancing an IP67 waterproof rating with effortless field maintenance for end-users. I am confident I can design a robust housing for you that simplifies the replacement process for homeowners while ensuring the internal electronics remain perfectly protected against moisture and thermal stress. To achieve a high-quality, serviceable design, I will develop a two-part assembly featuring a permanent heavy-gauge mounting bracket and a detachable LED module secured via sealed, IP-rated quick-connectors. Using SolidWorks, I will create DFM-optimized components focusing on high-grade silicone gaskets or overmolding to maintain a watertight seal during the expansion and contraction of thermal cycles. My approach includes thermal simulation to ensure LED longevity within the compact housing, paired with a curated Bill of Materials for cost-effective mass production. I will provide production-ready STEP files and electrical schematics fully compatible with standard 12V-15V AC/DC low-voltage landscape transformers. Are you planning for specific fixture lengths, or is there a lumen-per-foot target you would like the LED array to hit? Do you have a material preference for the visible faceplate, such as cast brass or powder-coated aluminum, to match current hardscape trends? I am available for a brief chat or message exchange to discuss the clearance needed for the "plug-and-play" mechanism and align on your specific technical requirements. I look forward to helping you bring this innovative and sustainable lighting product to the market.
