Crankshafts are used in a variety of vehicles to translate linear motion from a piston system to rotary motion. They are manufactured from a variety of materials and manufacturing techniques also vary dependent upon the type of vehicle where they are employed.
a) You are working on the redesign of the power transmissions systems for a new vehicle, Your particular task is to specify the appropriate material for the new crankshaft, the vehicle will be a similar specification to the Range Rover Evoque, however you are working for a competitor company and the ethos of the redesign is for weight reduction in all components to improve on performance and reduce emissions.
b) In conjunction with the research department, in light of the fact you have specified a novel material for the manufacture of the crankshaft, you are also tasked with devising a thorough testing schedule in order to ensure safety and performance of the new material before the crankshafts are manufactured.
c) You have been asked by the board how your material selection might differ if you were producing the same component for
a. A HGV – Heavy goods delivery vehicle
