I have 7 years of experience in developing web and mobile applications. The architecture of your app should be 1. Backend server with tomcat as application server and RESTful webservices which will be exposed to the apps for both android and iphone 2. You can use any database I recommend using postgresql as it is free and has good support 3. For mobile app I would suggest you to start with one app either android or iphone. Once an app is stabilized on one platform then porting that code into another platform would be easy.
