I am near the end of programming of my new site and will need to create a tool that will help me move my content (3000+ pages) from the old site to the new one. Every page will need to be reviewed during the transition so I'm not looking for a batch tool, but one that works on an individual page basis. Below is a bit more explaination.
Content Creation Tool
I would like to discuss the need to create a tool that will help us transition our current content form the old site to the new sites. A Content Transition Tool (CTT).
The content of the current site was almost entirely created using Dreamweaver templates. Within the templates (and final HTML) there are editable regions and tags where our content is placed. All of the content we want to place on the new site has these Dreamweaver tags in the source code.
For instance our old site Recipe template has the following editable region tags which correspond to our new sites CMS form fields.
META TAG keyword and description info.
Can a CTT be created that can go to a URL and pull the content between the tags and place it in the appropriate field in our CMS?
Additionally, it would be necessary for the CTT to store the URL it pulled the old content from and URL of the new file it's creating. This information is useful for writing the following files:
310 redirect info to .htaccess file: As 301 redirects tell search spiders where a moved file now resides, if we have the URL of the old file and URL of the new file, this info can be used to create a list of moved files. This part of the CTT will be used during the transition of the sites.
Write info to google sitemap: Google has created a sitemap protocol that is now being used by Yahoo, MSN and Ask. Basically, a Google Sitemap is a file which contains URLs and some additional information for all public pages or documents. Search spiders can read this file and add the defined pages to their index. The google sitemap file will be added to every time a new content page is added. This is probably not really part of the CTT but an addition to the CMS.
More info on the google sitemap format is here. [url removed, login to view]
The tool may be browser based to utilize manual editing of links to images and the movement of images to their new location. We will also be reviewing/editing each pages we transition prior to publishing.
My new site is programmed using Joomla as a CMS, but it is modified.
Let me know if you have any questions to help clairify the project.
