converting the unidirectional data port on a parallel port to bidirectional. How do u use java to enable bit 5 on the control port of the parallel port?

I have written code in java to read from the parallel port. I will be sending data in the form of a '1' or '0' to the data port from an external device and so need to convert the data port to bidirectional.

This is done by enabeling bit 5 on the control port. I have tried this but i don't think i did it correctly, so it doesn't work.

I am doing a project in which I have a device which produces a small voltage, this voltage then needs to be registered. When finished there will be many sensors each producing either 0V ('0') or 5V+ ('1'). When the voltage is '1' I need my java program to be able to read it and process it. Only one sensor will be '1' at a time. I have also written code, in java, for my project, and have produced the hardware for the project. The hardware and software work correctly, separately.

I have also, separately, written code to access the parallel port. I have obtained some drivers which enable me to read single sections of the port. I have also obtained a program which opens the ports on the pc for a set time, therefore bypassing windows XP built in safety.

I have been able to read the values coming into the port's status, control and data pins. Unfortunately the data pins seem to be working in unidirectional mode. I.e. only the pc can write to them. In order to make it bidirectional, I have been told I need to enable bit 5 of the control port of the parallel port.

That is where the problem is!

How do I write the '1' on bit 5? Is there any other way of doing it?
