I have a small online store, and we do not have any way (using our current software package) to let customers know the status of their orders.
All orders received generate an order confirmation email which is sent to the customer and any other addresses that I want.
If I sent this email to a designated email address at our store's domain, I would like it put into a database which shows the status of the order. The default would be 'Processing' and then once we had sent the order to the customer, we could change this to 'Despatched on (date)'.
Customers could then go to a page on our website to track orders. The email confirmation email that is automatically sent has a unique order ID number in the subject line, so it would make sense if this was the searchable key for customers. The email also has the customer's email address in the body of the email (along with a possible 2nd email address which may be the customer's or that of the intended recipient if different)
So, it could be that customers can search for their order using the order ID number and also their email address (to verify). Once found they would see the status of their order.
The unique ID numbers for orders are not sequential though as they are generated by a secure server that hosts our shopping cart (and other company's carts) so the email address for verification might not be necessary.
Can anyone create such an 'order status/tracking' function for my little site?
