10630 Web-based Image Viewer

A gallery site for Usenet Newsgroups images with features similar to [login to view URL] and/or guba.com. PHP5 HTTPD2 PostgreSQL 8 Gentoo 2.6.10 (Linux) Sparc Ultra 2 w/2GB RAM Here is the list of sections of this project: 1. A simple, fast and easy to use, webpage layout for display of thumbnail links used for selecting and viewing full-size images downloaded from the USENET newsserver. Each thumbnail will have back, forward, up and group-home navigation links. Certain keys should work so mouse is not required. 2. The thumbnails will be generated by another program outside of the scope of this job. The thumbnails will be available in the proper directory hierarchy for display as img links in a row/column format (see easynews or guba). 3. When the customer selects the desired thumbnail, the full-sized image will be downloaded to the viewer's screen directly from the news server, using the usual USENET hierarchies, ie, [login to view URL], (image groups only). PHP5 has modules that can access USENET articles (posts), see PEAR. PHP5 can also talk to PostgreSQL. No, we do NOT want to use MySQL. We LOVE Postgres and we can set up any needed database/tables. The Postgres database will be used to track information about the newsgroups and articles, such as newsgroup name, article number, rating etc. 4. The web user (customer) will need to log into the newsserver, so a login area must be incorporated for obtaining the user authentication data needed for retrieving the full-sized images. We will provide the login user/pw data via the PostgreSQL database. 5. Create a ratings system so that individual items can be tagged by the users as: best of (1-10), abusive, wrong category, spam, illegal. Then, a list of the best of the particular newsgroup/section can be displayed on each page (in a sidebar perhaps, whatever looks to be easy to use). This data will also be tracked in the PostgreSQL database. 6. Set up a page to view "Best of" images sorted by newsgroup name and customer ratings. Any full sized images will be displayed along with navigation links, or from group to group without using the thumbnails page. Again, enable usage by the mouse or the keyboard. The Ultra 2 system mentioned above can be used for development if needed, it certainly will be for testing. Any questions, suggestions or comments are always welcome.
