The purpose of this project is to rewrite the current ServiceCEO installer using the most up-to-date MSI installer technology for the Microsoft Windows XP and 2003 Server platforms. The current installer was created using Install Shield 7. This installer is functional but does not meet all of our customer’s needs.
The main installer rewrite consists of creating 4 distinct paths to support the multiple types of installs our customers require. The first path is the “full stack?? install on single workstation. This install is targeted towards small business with less than 5 users of the software. The second path is the ServiceCEO VB6 thick client only. This path is targeted towards both large and small businesses who want to install only the client on a workstation. The 3rd type of install is the MSDE database engine only install. This install is for small businesses that have less than 5 users. The fourth type of install is the installation of the ServiceCEO database on an existing SQL Server instance.
In addition to supporting the 4 distinct installation paths, the new installer must provide more robust uninstall functionality. Users must be able to completely uninstall ServiceCEO and its associated Database and restore the system to it’s pre-installation state.
We will also need to create a separate installer for Mobile Tech which requires the installation of Microsoft IIS and the ASP pages. These will not be included in the main installer MSI.
Other items the installer rewrite must take into consideration:
• The OS version of the target environment
• The OS service packs and updates required
• Potential DLL Conflicts
• Potential DLL Version issues
• Compliance with Software delivery engines such as Microsoft SMS
