We have purchased phpfox ([url removed, login to view]) for a community portal we're starting. It has an existing groups component, but it does not have all of the features we're looking for. We want to be able to do more with the groups--and we are interested in these changes so that we're creating a more powerful groupspace.
We like almost all of the features, but I tend to believe that groups need to be more powerful. When you have a group of people, you're going to have those people who just look on, but then you are going to have those who want to take an active part in doing things in the group. If you're doing a group on Citizen's action, or something like that. There's going to be someone who wants to put out crime statistics, or trend information or other useful information that is not considered a forum post. You want it to be there in a format that is closer to what it is--a news article, or informational bulletin. You're going to want that group to have it's own event calendar, to give a more personal feel to what's going on within the group. That way they can keep their events separate from everyone else's.
The groups component has a gallery section, but right now, there is only one main gallery. When you have an active group, you're going to have get-togethers, or other functions. You could end up with literally hundreds of pictures. You want to give the members the ability to organize their photos more than just having them all out there. We want the moderator to be able to create more than one gallery within his group.
Right now, the groups component does not have any kind of news/blogging component. In an active group, you're going to have personalities that everyone likes to hear from, and you want to be able to give the group the ability to share in their blogs. You don't have to create a new blog for the group, but be able to give writers the ability to syndicate their blogs in your group--but only if the moderator allows them to do so. We don't want that feature open to everyone.
The Three included drawings show the current view of the groups, plus a mock-up of what we'd like it to look like when it's complete.
We would like to add an event calendar that is local to the group, and a glossary of terms/faq section of the group.
