Video chat and streaming: scalable architecture blueprint and prototype [Important update, January 8th: Do not apply if you do not have solid (and proven) experience with scalable video streaming servers. Unfortunately I cannot modiy the project headline. This is not about website development (we do that on our own in Ruby), but about a solid prototype for a video streaming and chat service!!!) For an existing Content Management System (something like Shopify), we want to add video chat functionality. In the current system merchants have their very own shop with their own exclusive URL to sell digital content like videos or images. Customers can browse the shop anonymously or log in to get more features. We want to add video streaming to the shops. The merchant shall be able to connect his video camera to our server and start streaming live video from his shop website. Logged in users should be able to chat with the merchant, the chat history shall be visible to both logged in and non-logged in users. Your task is to provide an architecture blueprint (Word document) plus a prototype installation as virtual machine ([login to view URL]) or a docker image ([login to view URL]) based on Ubuntu Server. A nice little website shall be developed (preferably in Ruby on Rails, but PHP or something else is ok, too), which demonstrates the video chat functionality. If currently no video is streamed, there should be a placeholder image (e.g. “Next chat on Jan 24, 17:30 EST”) or a clock ticking down till the next video session. If commercial software is necessary (maybe Wowza?), a trial license should be sufficient. It’s up to you to provide all the parts to make this thing work. The demo website does not need to be fancy, it shall merely show the video chat working for both logged in and logged out users. Most important requirements are scalability (hundreds of merchants and potentially thousands of concurrent viewers) plus simplicity (it should be very easy to connect a standard video camera to the system and start streaming).
