The Amazon rainforest of Brazil is home to 40,000 different species of plants alone and these plants play a vital role in oxygen production for the entire world. As such, the entire world has a stake in its preservation. On the other hand, Brazil also has a large and developing economy that focuses on providing raw goods to the rest of the world. There has been disagreement about if and how portions of the rainforest should be destroyed to allow Brazilians to produce economically important crops. Some have said that the Amazon must be protected no matter what. Others have argued that efforts to impose the environmental values of the developed world upon South American nations represents a modern form of imperialism. Imagine that you are on reporting to a special committee for the UN that is examining both sides of the argument. They would also like you to suggest some practical solutions that would represent a compromise and ameliorate the conflict of interest between the developed and the developing world with respect to the Brazilian rainforest.
