Through these statements, we hope to get to learn more
about your thought process and research interests. For this round, we request that applicants compose two short essays.
The first is an original, scholarly essay on the following topic:
U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have announced they will meet on the sidelines
of the upcoming G20 Summit in Osaka on June 28th and 29th. Both presidents have indicated that discussions will
center around relations between the United States and Russia and a range of national security issues, such as
ongoing situations in Syria and North Korea.
Please choose a topic relevant to this meeting and present an argument on why you think both Presidents should
consider it as a priority for bilateral discussions in Osaka. Additionally, how would this topic produce fruitful
cooperation between the countries. You may find it useful to choose a topic related to the work you would like to do
at SURF, though this is not a necessity.
We recommend this essay be approximately 400 words, with a maximum of 500 words. This essay should be free from
grammatical errors, present an argument with a well-defined structure, and provide relevant evidence to support its
claims. You should incorporate at least three scholarly sources, understood as peer-reviewed journal articles and books
published with a university press. You are welcome to cite non-academic sources (for example, news articles or trade
books) in addition to these scholarly sources, if you choose. Please use in-text citations using Chicago Manual of Style to
reference all texts. We also request that you use Chicago Manual of Style to format your bibliography. Please include the
bibliography at the end of the essay. Footnotes are an optional tool for providing extra detail.

Your essay will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
• Features a well-structured, logical argument
• Demonstrates critical thinking
• Writing is clear and concise
• Adheres to academic standards and cites at
least THREE sources using Chicago style
• Corresponds with the specific instructions in
the above prompt
We also request that applicants submit a second essay, which summarizes how their background, relevant experience,
and skillset prepares them for the working group of their choice. SURF believes in a holistic team-building process. In our
experience, applicants with no background in the particular topic of a working group can still join and become valuable,
contributing members. Sufficient motivation and dedication can stand in place for relevant background. This essay should
include any professional ties to potential interviewees or organizations that may be relevant for your working group and
be approximately 200 words, but no more than 250 words in length. Note that additional essays in the same format as
explained above are optional but recommended for your second and third working group choices.
