Product Re-design Concept – converting existing unit into single-use disposable

BACKGROUND: The project is focused on a specialty child seat that was designed to help transport young children safely on ambulances. It has two components – an external “shell” within which a single use disposable cushion is placed. The current device is at proof-of-concept phase and has Solidworks files created for both components. Our next step would be to prototype and crash test the unit, however given that the National Association of State EMS Officials (NASEMSO) is still in the process of drafting the crash-test specifications, further development is on hold.

In the interim, we have been speaking with a 3rd party about creating a “mass-casualty” version of the device. It’s for use in situations like Katrina where hundreds of kids need evacuation and FEMA - the (Federal Emergency Mgmt Agency) is called in to coordinate the response. Our existing PedREST device was not designed for this scenario.

WHAT’S NEEDED is a PedREST – Mass Casualty Incident (PR-MCI) device designed specifically to focus on larger-scale child evacuations:

- where the entire unit is reasonably inexpensive, single-use and disposable (bio-degradable)

- can be stacked and stored in containers in a warehouse ready for rapid deployment as needed

- is unpacked and easily assembled onsite with our existing disposable cushion in the center

- yet is still “solid enough” to carry a child up to 90 lbs safely, and keep them secure assuming a 20g load

- It also needs to be able to attach to an mass casualty-type evacuation device (stretcher, litter, etc.)

The PR-MCI will be similar to our current unit without any bells and whistles…and at a much lower cost.

THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING TO HIRE:

Based on preliminary conversations, we have a reasonable degree of confidence in the materials we are considering using for this (coated corrugated cardboard glued together to form a rigid structure), however we are open to considering other evidence-based alternatives. What we are looking for is an engineer who can work with us to help us achieve the following deliverables:

1. Proof-of-concept / feasibility assessment – Present a design concept using the materials proposed above or a recommended alternative; provide a feasibility assessment of the approach’s ability to meet the parameters described above including incorporating the existing disposable cushion; demonstrate functionality and assembly, etc. Deliverables: Proof of concept + CAD data (not production ready)

2. Concept illustrations via hi-def photorealistic renderings of the product and infographic PDF boards showing the materials, construction, assembly, functions and the ability to transport and store the unit. This can be done either in SolidWorks or an alternative CAD app. however finished models need to include a cushion that matches the textures and colors of the original SWKS cushion models / images provided. Deliverables: infographic pdf boards and hi-res .PNG renderings of the PR-MCI with the cushion (noting that not all items are 100% designed and engineered).

3. Rough cost estimates - Preliminary research for manufacturability to generate “ballpark numbers” for cost per unit for the PR-MCI “shell” (we already have the cpu for the cushion for budgeting purposes) as well as a budget to bring the PR-MCI from concept to production (preferably in 3 buckets: design & engineering; prototyping & testing & validation; tooling & optimization). Deliverables: 2 “rough” cost estimates: mfg cost per unit as well as cost to engineer and produce the final product

OUR GOAL is to present the analysis and the concept images to the emergency preparedness group to see if this is a project they would like us to pursue further…and therefore, fund the development (i.e. Phase II)

This project starts immediately and has an Oct 4th deadline for completion.
