We search for an expert who can design a new opnSense firewall system for a datacenter. Also part of the job is to consult us in a new solution how to setup best the new network for IPv4 and IPv6. Also part of the job is to share us how you want to document NAT and firewall rules and how to ensure that they will stay documented in the future. Since we get often application/proposals of "experts" with no real hands on experience in the requested topic, please provide us: - how big is your currently maintained network with opnSense (how many IPs, how many networks, how many VLANs) - how is your opnSense connected to the internal network (bandwidth, technology, redundancy)? - how many opnSense setups have you done in the last 2 years? - how you ensure ongoing documentation of firewalls (topology, nat and firewall rules) with multiple administrative persons? - what is the best practice for IPv4 and IPv6 setup? We are searching for someone to get started with our new opnSense in real environment. We have a lab setup with already good experience in it. Also we would like to have someone on the long run to take responsibility for the full firewall in the future. Our expertise is about 25y+ in IT business, so do not try to trick us, we will evict you forever from our acceptance list. Play honest and fair and we do also. Name us your real experience and we may still consider you if you play honest, even if you have some lack of skills. Also we do not disclose any budgets or hourly rates we want to pay. Please place your best bid, also do not try to ask us for the budget, since we will not answer.

Greetings my name is Ervin. This is my experience with pfsense. 1- i manage a cluster of Pfsense HA, configured via CARP HA. 2- size of network 4096 IPs , different ranges set up under different vlans for different reasons , voip, internet, guest-wifi, internal wifi. Conference rooms. Servers ip range. Managment ports etc. 3-pfsense that ive deployed are physical devices with ports of 10gbp/s , configured on HA. Internally there is no limit to the port utilization (it never gets to 10gbp/s) , externally they are limited to 200MBp/s as of the connection to the provider. (ISP) 4-ive used Atlassian confluence to document the changes on network (but this is internally selectable from the company that i work. 5-im not sure guys, ive worked with IPv4 all the time, little to very modest IPv6 implementations on pfsense. With ipv4 i can tell you that i like the granularity, as much as possible. Access to only needed ports not beyond and not above. A very carfull inspections with SNMP monitoring tools to the traffic of the interfaces to keep things in line (some times a huge traffic is easily spotted this way) 6- ive done 8 deployments , Cluster HA. Simple firewall on the cloud , behind them ive put esxi servers management ports to protext exposure of web interface and other ports. Ive done BGP via FreeRangeRouting over IPsec tunnels to AWS and AWS Gateways The rest normal firewalls. Nothing special. Currently im looking for a long run project and not a single shot.

Differences are only on the GUI part. I have done more than 20 installations both standalone or failover setups with CARP. - how big is your currently maintained network with opnSense (how many IPs, how many networks, how many VLANs) I have a network which has 4 pfSense firewalls ( Two clustered and running BGP daemon in the front and two clustered in the inside part of the network for intervlan routing) - how is your opnSense connected to the internal network (bandwidth, technology, redundancy)? Dell Powerconnect L2 switches plus some Layer Cisco 9300 - how many opnSense setups have you done in the last 2 years? More than 20 pfSense - how you ensure ongoing documentation of firewalls (topology, nat and firewall rules) with multiple administrative persons? I create visual diagram plus their corresponing IPAM sheets. - what is the best practice for IPv4 and IPv6 setup? IPv6 needs more attention when has to do with NAT64 or other dual stack workarounds to offer for "talking" with IPv4. IPv4 more packet overhead in general but quite simpler in the notation.

I am a Network Specialist, CCIE Certified, i have extensive experience with Cisco, Fortinet and PaloAlto Firewalls, i haven’t worked on opnsense(Free Open Source Firewall)but in the end its another firewall with a different GUI. I am certain that i can deliver this project with utmost satisfaction to you. If you wish to go ahead with me. I’d require some prerequisites as to where the firewall is going to placed and its role in that segment of the network.

I will not claim to be an expert in all things openSense. All of my experience is with PFSense which is supposedly very similar. I have setup 17 PfSense 2.2, 2.3, and 2.6 sites within the last 10 years. Extensive use of OpenVPN and IPSEC VPN. Both in virtual environments within vmware and physical servers running pfsense on bare metal. Each office location was between 20 and 500 users. Three Datacenters. I currently still manage their PfSense environment part time as needed, so what you are offering seems idential to what i have done, which is the heavy lifting of setup of new sites, and new environment and then care and feeding for operations to keep it stable and troubleshoot as needed. I am not a CLI or Freebsd expert, so when it comes to the CLI, i am not an expert. However, I am a CCNP with over 25 years of Cisco and PaloAlto networking as my full time job. In my day job, i manage 15 datacenter in 17 states and 5 overseas datacenters. BGP, OSPF, RIP, Static routing, IPSEC, Wireless, LAN,WAN, Vlan design Cisco ISE ETC. I play with the big Cisco routers ASR9000, ISR4300, Nexus 9K, CAT 9500, ETC.

I can surely help, Please find below my response for your asks: - how many opnSense setups have you done in the last 2 years? --> 3 Setups (2 for Lab and 1 for production) - how big is your currently maintained network with opnSense (how many IPs, how many networks, how many VLANs) --> Presently I am maintaining for 14 subnets, 14 VLANs and multinetwork (Internal/External) - how is your opnSense connected to the internal network (bandwidth, technology, redundancy)? -->Lan Network. - how you ensure ongoing documentation of firewalls (topology, nat and firewall rules) with multiple administrative persons? -->If you have ITSM process then that is very efficient to track the changes. Also can set some ground rules to apply changes and update the tracker. - what is the best practice for IPv4 and IPv6 setup? --> 1. Understand the requirement and projection of host IPs 2. Break the network into subnets, to save IP's. 3. Controlled Inbound/Outbound traffic. 4. Use NAT/PAT for the traffic forwarding and many more are there.
