I am a geoscientist working on a concept to create a virtual visitor centre for an Earth Science project.
Proposal for a Virtual Earth Science Visitor Centre
We are looking for independent Unity 3D game developers to help us with our “multi-player” project.
There are two main elements to phase 1 of this project that we need help with:
- Creating a technical scope and cost estimate for Phase 1
- Creation of the Phase 1 deliverable
We are a charitable organisation who are ultimately interested in creating a virtual Earth Science visitor centre in Unity 3D. The ultimate aim of the centre is to raise awareness of global environmental issues and how they might be resolved in order to attain a carbon neutral and sustainable future for mankind.
We have suggested Unity 3D as it is popular and accessible, and we believe it is flexible enough to do what we want in terms of interactive Earth Science experiences.
Ultimately the VR experience will link to assets and gamified interactive experiences produced by many different creators. But in the first instance we want to establish a core reception and meeting area (joining room) where visitors can enter, meet and talk to others, attend presentations, and learn more about the project.
Once this core platform is created, we can then begin to bolt on the other assets and resources we know already exist, and commission further assets or run sponsored competitions to create assets, as the platform grows.
We need help and advice on how to go about this. We believe the best strategy would be to begin with a “joining room” that will enable us to begin holding meetings with the public and encourage backers to invest in the stretch goals of the project.
We envisage that the core project will be crowd-funded and a lot of the add-on content will be crowd-sourced or sponsored by industry.
We already have Rhino Meshes, LIDAR and photogrammetry for the proposed meeting place, and we imagine utilising a lot of the free natural assets that are already available in the Unity 3D asset library (or SketchFab libraries). Not that the meeting place is an external location in the mountains.
In the first instance we believe we need:
- A landscaped joining room
- A range of avatars for visitors to choose from
- Passive information displays
- A means to make presentations
- Selected interactive visitor displays
- In-game chat / IM
Ideally it would also be good to have the following functionality that we are aware of from other platforms (although we have no idea if these things are possible in Unity 3D).
- The ability for avatars to customise their look with a selfie-photo (e.g. [login to view URL])
- The ability for avatars to pop in to a Zoom-like video-conference interface when in close proximity to other avatars (e.g. [login to view URL])
