I want to give storm chasers and severe-weather enthusiasts a fast, focused desktop web application that does one thing exceptionally well: show where tornadoes are right now and why the atmosphere is primed for them. Think of it as a lightweight, tornado-only version of MyRadar—no earthquakes, fires, or other distractions. Core functionality • A real-time, auto-refreshing map that plots active tornado warnings, radar-indicated rotation, confirmed debris signatures, and storm-relative velocity data. • In-browser alerts that fire the moment a new warning or tornado-reported observation is issued, with the option to filter by state or custom radius. Interface expectations The layout should be detailed and data-rich, not minimal. I need layered toggles for radar, satellite, SPC outlooks, shear tracks, and basic storm-info panels, all without feeling cluttered on a large desktop monitor. Technical pointers (flexible on exact stack) • Pull live feeds from authoritative sources such as NOAA, NWS, SPC, and MRMS; WebSocket or server-sent events to keep latency low. • Modern mapping tech—Leaflet, Mapbox GL JS, or similar—plus a clean component-based front end (React, Vue, or Svelte are fine). • Well-structured code and docs so I can extend the app later for mobile. Deliverables & acceptance 1. A production-ready desktop web application deployed to a public URL. 2. Source code in a Git repo with a README covering setup, data sources, and deployment steps. 3. Brief user guide that explains layer controls, alert filters, and data refresh intervals. 4. Demonstration of live tornado data and alerting during hand-off (recorded screencast or real-time session). If you thrive on meteorological data and real-time mapping, this will be a fun build. Let’s create the go-to tornado tracker together.

Hi, This project requires a robust real-time mapping system that integrates multiple authoritative meteorological data feeds with low-latency alerting and a detailed, layered UI. The main engineering challenge lies in orchestrating continuous live data streams and efficiently rendering complex map layers without performance degradation. I usually structure these systems with a clear separation between data ingestion, real-time event handling, and front-end rendering layers to ensure maintainability and scalability. My experience enhancing existing applications with custom real-time features and building WebSocket-driven live pipelines supports this approach. I recommend separating the alerting logic from map rendering to allow fine-grained control over data refresh and user notifications. This also facilitates future mobile extension as requested. Ensuring reliable data updates and graceful fallback mechanisms will be critical to maintain user trust during severe weather events. I typically design such systems for long-term production use with thorough documentation and clean code to ease future enhancements and handoffs. Thanks, Hercules

Hi,This project caught my attention because it combines two areas I’ve worked with extensively: real-time data applications and interactive map-based interfaces. I can build a focused tornado tracking platform where users can quickly understand what is happening right now—without being overwhelmed by unrelated weather data. I can develop the complete application with: • Live tornado warnings and storm activity on an interactive map • Radar, satellite, SPC outlook, rotation, shear and debris-signature layers • Real-time updates through WebSockets/SSE • Instant browser alerts with state and radius filters • Detailed storm information and layer controls • Responsive, data-rich React interface optimized for desktop • Node.js backend for feed processing, APIs and real-time communication • Integration with authoritative NOAA, NWS, SPC and MRMS sources • Caching and performance optimisation for fast map updates I’ll also make the architecture modular and well documented, so adding mobile support or new weather data sources later is straightforward. I’ve done similar real-time dashboard and API-driven projects and can share relevant portfolio/work links directly in the chat. I can take care of development, testing, deployment, Git documentation and handover, including demonstrating the live data and alerting system. I’m ready to discuss the data feeds you already have access to and start building the first map prototype.

Hi, I'm Denis, a full-stack developer who has built several real-time data applications with live feeds, WebSocket connections, and interactive mapping systems. This tornado tracker is exactly the kind of focused, data-driven project I enjoy. I understand your goal: a clean, desktop-focused web app that pulls live tornado warnings and atmospheric data from NOAA, NWS, and SPC, displays it on an interactive map with layered controls, and alerts users immediately when new warnings arrive. I'd start by setting up reliable data ingestion from your authoritative sources, then build the map layer with Leaflet or Mapbox GL JS for clean visualization. React would provide solid component structure for managing radar overlays, SPC outlooks, and alert filters without cluttering a large monitor. WebSocket connections would keep latency low and ensure alerts fire instantly. The critical technical challenge is data freshness and alert reliability. We need to handle incoming warnings gracefully, deduplicate alerts to prevent spam, and ensure smooth map updates when multiple data sources refresh simultaneously. I'd structure state management carefully to avoid performance issues as layers stack up. One realistic risk is API rate limits or occasional data source delays—I'd build in retry logic and graceful degradation so the app stays usable even if one feed is temporarily slow. I'm ready to start immediately. Let's discuss the details. Thanks, Denis.

Hello, I hope you're doing well. I build real-time mapping apps with React, Node.js, WebSockets, and Leaflet. For this tornado tracker, I'd structure NOAA/NWS feeds behind a Node service, then stream warning and radar updates to a layered React map. Alert filtering can use geofencing by state or radius. Could we have a quick chat to confirm the MRMS data format and alert latency needs? Thank you, Jasjot

hello, the latency you are worried about is not in the transport. WebSockets will not make this faster, because the delay lives upstream: NWS pushes warnings on its own cadence, MRMS rotation products refresh around every two minutes, and a radar volume scan takes four to six minutes to complete. so the difference between a sharp app and a sluggish one is which products you subscribe to and how you handle the gap, not whether the browser holds a socket open. which leads to the thing i would treat as non negotiable. every layer displays the timestamp of the data it is actually showing, and goes visibly stale when a feed stops. an app that keeps drawing a five minute old radar frame as if it were current is worse than showing nothing, because people make decisions in the field from it. same reason it needs to say plainly that it is not an official warning source. the other honest note is radar rendering. turning NEXRAD or MRMS into map tiles yourself is its own project, so either we use an existing tile service or that becomes most of the budget. is this US only, or wider coverage later? is there budget for a radar tile provider, or must tiles be generated ourselves? have a nice day.

Hey there! When severe weather is unfolding, a map needs to deliver the right information instantly without overwhelming the user, and that balance is what I’d focus on with this build. I can build the desktop application around a layered, data rich map with fast real time updates for live warnings, rotation, debris signatures, and storm relative velocity, along with configurable state and radius alerts and clear storm information panels. I’ll structure the architecture so the data ingestion, processing, and mapping components remain cleanly separated, making the application easier to maintain and giving you a solid foundation for extending it toward mobile later. The interface will also keep the different data layers configurable so users can focus on the information that matters during an active event. I’ll keep the project practical to hand over, with clear documentation covering the live data sources, setup, deployment, layer controls, and refresh behavior. I can also show you similar real time mapping examples in chat where relevant. Portfolio: https://www.freelancer.pk/u/Hammadhassan21 Best regards, Hammad Hassan

I've built real-time mapping applications pulling live weather and geospatial data feeds before, so this is straightforward for me. I'll set up a React frontend with Leaflet or Mapbox GL JS for the map layer, wire WebSocket connections to NOAA/NWS/SPC/MRMS endpoints for live tornado warnings and radar data, and implement state-filtered alert logic with in-browser notifications that fire on new observations. The toggles for radar, satellite, SPC outlooks, and shear tracks will be React component state—clean, composable, and ready to extend to mobile later. I'll deploy to a public URL with a production build, document the data pipeline and layer architecture in the README, and provide a user guide plus a recorded walkthrough showing live alert triggering and data refresh. The main operational concern is maintaining sub-second latency on WebSocket reconnection and ensuring alert deduplication doesn't drop edge cases during high-volume tornado activity. I can start immediately. Thanks, Andrii.

✋ Hi, the main challenge is keeping NOAA, NWS, SPC, and MRMS data synchronized so warnings, radar rotation, debris signatures, and velocity layers do not show stale or conflicting states. I’d normalize those feeds in a Node backend, cache active events, then push only changes to the React map through SSE or WebSockets. Each weather product would stay as an independent toggleable layer. Do you want storm-relative velocity shown as actual radar imagery, or as simplified derived overlays and storm markers?

==== Hi - Truong here ==== "REAL-TIME TORNADO WARNING MAP" — you need live NOAA/NWS storm data turned into a fast, data-rich desktop tracker. I’d use React + Node.js with Leaflet and server-sent updates, separating each NOAA/NWS/MRMS feed so one delayed source doesn’t freeze the map. Alerts will be filtered by state/radius and tied directly to new warning or observation events. The main question is which live feeds/API access you already have available for MRMS and radar data, especially for rotation and storm-relative velocity? Looking forward to work with you.
