We have an existing content management system which is used to contribute news, match reports, videos and related content. We want to refresh the public facing front page of the site.
The scope of this project is to redesign the home page only - we have a server side developer who will then integrate this with the existing platform.
The old layout is not mobile friendly, very text-y and lacking up-to-date navigation features.
We want to move to a modern responsive design. I have created some mockups covering how we think it could look on a Desktop or mobile device.
It should use modern CSS and HTML5 techniques to achieve this, such as image src sets for the main carousel, so that it looks good on all screen resolutions. As an example, I think Dundee United’s web site does this well (See link below). Even if you shrink a desktop browser window to a smaller size it automatically detects that and adjusts what is presented on the screen. We would prefer the bootstrap library to be used but open to discussion on this.
Our stats show that we get visitors on all major devices and browsers – iOS, android, windows, apple and linux. Mobile, tablet and desktop. Therefore, the design will need to be standards compliant and work across all these platforms.
Starting at the top of the page should be a main site banner followed by the navigation menu. That will split into sub-menus per category. This can either be a dropdown as shown on the mockup or a submenu that opens when the category is clicked. If on a smaller resolution the menu should fold down to the top right corner and a mobile friendly menu appear instead.
Next is the main carousel which will show the most recent news stories or match reports. This should flick between 4-5 stories. In most cases it will be images but occasionally we have video content. We use vimeo for hosting the videos (see current site but you might need to go back to April as there have not been any posted recently). If the video can be played from within the carousel that would be ideal, but if not a still image could be shown and a popup or link to another page with the embedded video. We anticipate video content becoming more prominent in future than it was last season.
Below that is a variable number of pinned pages which link off to more content. Then further down, next/previous match, league table and sponsor logos at the very bottom.

They are using the following resolutions in their main carousel which seems to work well:
Desktop image - 2000x700
Tablet image - 1024x700
Mobile image - 640x700
