Expert Scientific Researcher

Greetings, my name is André Serpa, PhD. I am a Portuguese biologist specialized in Neuroscience, an expert researcher who has published eight articles, five as first author, and defended two theses. The topic of the research regards the A1 adenosine receptor and the CB1 cannabinoid receptor activity in the hippocampus. The A1 receptor is antagonized by coffee, whereas the CB1 receptor is stimulated by cannabis. My findings are highly relevant in promoting neuronal survival in pathologies with associated excitotoxicity. Altogether, I have dedicated almost 15 years to scientific research, which includes countless hours spent on edition of scientific papers, literature reviews, and interpretation of large volumes of information, to create original scientific content fit for publication.

Researched temporal lobe epilepsy at the hippocampus of epileptic rats. I tested if VPAC receptors are differently expressed, and indeed they are. This suggests altered synaptic function and possibly impairment of synaptic transmission in the hippocampus of epileptic patients.

Bioconstruction

Debarro Architecture
2022
Bioconstruction integrates principles of ecology, biology, and architecture to create structures that have minimal negative impacts on the environment without sacrificing energy efficiency and comfort. It uses local natural resources such as clay, straw and sand. These resources are mixed in different proportions to obtain construction material with different properties, used to build different parts of the house.

Permaculture Design Course

Projeto Novas Descobertas
2022
Permaculture is a holistic approach to sustainable living. Moreover, it teaches how to regenerate soils which have been overgrazed or nutrient depleted, and how to live in harmony with Nature as an inclusive part of Nature.

The Role of cGMP on Adenosine A1 Receptor-mediated Inhibition of Synaptic Transmission

Frontiers of Pharmacology
We investigated if blocking the NOS/sGC/cGMP/PKG pathway using nitric oxide synthase, protein kinase G, and soluble guanylyl cyclase inhibitors modify the A1 receptor effect on synaptic transmission. The results suggest that the inhibitory action of adenosine A1 receptors on synaptic transmission at hippocampus is, in part, mediated by the NOS/sGC/cGMP/PKG pathway.

Interference competition between ladybird beetle adults: effects on growth and reproductive capacity

Population Ecology
We set out to assess the effects of interference competition from conspecific and heterospecific adult ladybirds on its growth and reproduction. The presence of H. axyridis adults, unlike the presence of C. undecimpunctata, significantly affected the reproductive numerical response of C. undecimpunctata. This findings sustain that the introduction of H. axyridis could endanger the population of C. undecimpunctata from the Azorean ecosystem.

Cannabinoid CB1 and adenosine A1 receptors independently inhibit hippocampal synaptic transmission

European Journal of Pharmacology
Adenosine A1 and cannabinoid CB1 receptors are affected by drugs widely consumed by humans, as it is the case for caffeine and tetrahydrocannabinol. Our results indicate independent synaptic transmission modulation by adenosine A1 and cannabinoid CB1 receptors at the hippocampus, suggesting that availability of signalling molecules involved in their transducing pathways are not limiting factors for their modulatory role.

Modulation of cGMP accumulation by adenosine A1 receptors at the hippocampus

European Journal of Pharmacology
Adenosine A1 receptor is highly expressed in hippocampus where it inhibits neurotransmitter release and has neuroprotective activity. A clear link between adenosine A1 receptor and the second messenger cGMP remained to be established, until now. We found adenosine A1 receptors increase intracellular cGMP formation at hippocampus, and this effect seems to be gender dependent.

Opposing reduced VPAC1 and enhanced VPAC2 VIP receptors of the rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

Neurochemistry International
We now investigated how VPAC1 and VPAC2 receptor levels change in the Li2+-pilocarpine rat model of MTLE. We found decreased VPAC1 and increased VPAC2 receptor levels at the hippocampus of epileptic rats. This findings indicate VIP receptors are attractive therapeutic targets in temporal lobe epilepsy, allowing a differential targeting of the cellular events contributing to epileptogenesis.

The combined inhibitory effect of the A1 and CB1 receptors on cAMP accumulation

BioMed Research International
Adenosine A1 and cannabinoid CB1 receptors are highly expressed in hippocampus where they trigger similar transduction pathways. We investigated how the combined acute activation of A1 and CB1 receptors modulates cAMP accumulation in rat hippocampal slices. Our findings suggest the combined effect of CB1 and A1 receptors on cAMP formation is additive and CB1 receptor activity is not affected by short-term A1 receptor desensitization.

Combined neuroprotective action of adenosine A1 and cannabinoid CB1 receptors

Neurochemical International
We set forth to assess the combined action of A1 and CB1 receptors against glutamate NMDA receptor-mediated excitotoxicity at the hippocampus. Cell damage was assessed by measuring propidium iodide uptake and lactate dehydrogenase activity released from cultured hippocampal slices exposed to NMDA. The results suggest that CB1 and A1 receptors merged effect results in cumulative neuroprotection.
