Alberto Pérez Ortiz is an Industrial Engineer with an MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems. He is currently in his last year of his EngD focused on tidal resource modelling. He has over five years of experience in engineering and consultancy in the fields of energy and sustainability. Alberto has performed more than fifty energy audits to businesses of a wide range of sizes and areas of activity. He has experience as a solar energy consultant undertaking energy production assessments of large grid connected solar photovoltaic plants. Alberto has worked for a Green Building Council where he led the creation of new rating tools and he managed the certification process of green buildings. During his career he has worked in Spain, Norway, Vietnam and he is currently working in the United Kingdom. Alberto speaks fluent English, Spanish, Catalan and he has a fair level in French.

Tidal Resource in Strait between Island and Landmass

This paper characterizes the resource at an idealised strait and assesses the influence of the presence of the landmass on the extracted power from the strait. The results show that the island geometry and associated flow dynamics can alter estimates based on ideal flows. The results confirm that the maximum power extracted is not directly related to the power naturally dissipated by bottom friction or the undisturbed kinetic flux in the strait.

Verification and Validation of Tidal Resource Assessment for a Strait between Island and Landmass

This paper describes preliminary verification and validation tests used to confirm the accuracy of the Fluidity shallow flow model when applied to flow past an island in the vicinity of a semi-infinite landmass. These tests will help underpin the development of a numerical model of tidal devices in a coastal strait between an island and a landmass.

A Systematic Approach to Undertake Tidal Energy Resource Assessment with Telemac-2D

This paper presents a systematic approach to tidal channel simulation using a finite element model which solves depth-averaged free surface flow equations. A formal resource assessment methodology for tidal energy development in known tidal regimes may be established by following procedures outlined herein. The methodology is subsequently applied to an actual case study, the Pentland Firth.
