I just finished a project with a master (mega) and 16 slaves (mini pro) connected via I2c protocol. The hardware is installed in the trunk of a vehicle, reads data rfid (objects mounted in a vehicle) and sends it to a mobile phone application (objects --> (rfid) arduino pro mini (slaves) --> (i2c) arduino mega (master) ---> json --> WiFi --> firebase server --> android app).
