CBEC provide applications to the entire Investment Bank (IB). I worked on a system called CRD which was used to manage the security entitlements for the majority of the applications within IB, including the banks public [login to view URL] website. The system also managed clients research subscriptions. The system lived in an incredibly complex environment with direct integration to almost 30 systems and potentially hundreds of other downstream systems dependent on its operation. The development team consisted of four developers and the project was run using the Scrum methodology, this meant that business analysis, implementation decisions and planning are left entirely up to the development team. As such I was frequently in contact with the business users of the system discussing and clarifying requirements. We completed about eight iterations during my time here. Initially the project was to make massive internal changes to the applications as a result of the recent merger with Bank One. The merger related work lasted for about four months and ended with a major global software release involving at least ten separate systems all releasing code simultaneously. I worked through the night deploying schema changes into the production database environment as part of the release. After the merger related work was complete we continued with day to day maintenance and enhancement of the application. Due to the complex nature of the environment and the visibility of the application the work here was incredibly challenging but very rewarding. During my time at the bank I made various contributions to the development community including: Gave a presentation on automated testing to the Glasgow office. Frequently participated in Wiki, email trials and discussions around java, UNIX, testing and development methodologies. Arranged and planned a series of workshops and presentations for two of the banks London based distinguished engineers to present in Glasgow. Was nominated to be part of the 'Technical Leadership Initiative' this was a panel of the top technologists in CBEC Glasgow, around seven of us met fortnightly to brainstorm current issues and try to spread a culture of excellence around the Glasgow office Donated code and suggestions to the IB Architecture group to aid in their development of the banks light weight J2EE stack built on open source components. Submitted components in perl, C and Java to the IB 'reuse repository'. Frequently participated in the Agile Methodologies SIG.
