Elsevier Science wanted a fuel cell textbook based upon mathematical modeling that would appeal to professionals in industry, professors, and college students. I wrote this textbook based upon the current state of the art in fuel cell modeling in 2007 – 2008. I pitched this idea to Elsevier Science based upon my compilation of mathematical models that I was creating in 2007. The Table of Contents for this textbook is given here. The textbook is 456 pages with over 100 illustrations. The main topics in this textbook are: fuel cell electrochemistry, fuel cell thermodynamics, charge transport, mass transport, heat transport, modeling the proton exchange membrane, modeling the gas diffusion layers, modeling the catalyst layers, modeling the flow field plates, modeling micro fuel cells, modeling fuel cell stacks, and fuel cell system design.

Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies wanted a renewable energy education textbook to include with many of their science education kits. The renewable energy education manual was focused on students from grades 6 to 12. Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies contacted me for this project since they were familiar with Clean Fuel Cell Energy, LLC (my previous company), and my first textbook published by McGraw-Hill “Designing and Building Fuel Cells.” They wanted a manual that was interesting, educational, and has highly relevant technical content to help young people to obtain a head start in renewable energy education. Each patent is examined to ensure that it is related to the topic of interest. The patent analysis can be divided as follows, and further subdivided into more specific categories: ◦Trends by filing and issue year ◦Trends by country ◦Trends by topic ◦Trends by assignee A thorough summary of each patent is given as part of the patent analysis in the report Appendix. Design of Experiments (DOE) is an important tool that helps to reduce the amount of experiments required, and study the interaction between variables. It is an important set of tools that allows the experimenter to identify critical variables and variable interactions without performing hundreds or even thousands of experiments. In the recent past, almost all scientists and engineers performed experiments by changing one variable at a time (while holding all others constant). Depending upon what the system or experiment is, this may not a bad method, especially if one variable is causing most of the change with the system. However, there are many instances where there is not one main variable that is causing the change in the system — but it is the interaction between one or more variables. DOE will tell you the important factors or interactions to change or experiment with.

Lynntech wanted a dynamic mathematical model of a pin-hole in the Nafion 115 fuel cell membrane for Lynntech’s fuel cell stack as part of an NASA SBIR. The purpose of the mathematical model was to predict if and when a hydrogen-oxygen cross-over event occured. The following questions were answered as part of the mathematical model: 1) What is the maximum amount of energy that can be put into a fuel cell stack? 2) What events will occur when there is a hydrogen and oxygen crossover as a result of a pin-hole? 3) What type of damage can be caused by the hydrogen-oxygen crossover event? 4) How hot does the system get a as a function of time? The final report was written in May, 2008, and had 158 pages. A program was also delivered with over 3000 lines of code. The transient 1-D mass, heat and pressure model was created in MATLAB, and included mass balances, pressure drop, heat flows through the stack, energy balances, and heat generation calculations for the layers within a fuel cell.

BCC Research wanted a new market and technology research report that covered clean coal technologies and coal-based products. Clean coal technology is a new generation of coal-based processes and technologies that reduce pollutant emissions. There have been hundreds of government-sponsored programs between research institutions and companies to improve existing coal technologies. In addition, coal by-products are used in making a multitude of products that we use everyday. This technology, market, and patent research report was written for BCC Research in 2006. The Table of Contents for this report is given here. The final technology and market research report was 232 pages. An additional patent research report was also included, and included approximately 200 pages of patent summaries and analysis.
