Dissertation extract: GIS selection of wind farm site
The study aims to briefly explore the conservational and landscape character aspects of wind energy development and propose a geographical information system-based approach in wind energy site selection across Northern Ireland while examining the suitability of a GIS-approach to the problem. The aims and objectives are achieved isolating areas of lower ecological and environmental risk in Northern Ireland. This was done by importing relevant spatial data into the GIS database performing spatial functions to identify and select the areas using a user-defined criteria. The scope of the paper is to provide a preliminary case study example of the role and contribution GIS can make towards site selection process of wind energy development. Keywords: wind, renewable energy, GIS, bats, planning and development.
